“Play me some songs about a ramblin’ man, put old Jim Beam in my hand”, Just not this one.

May 14th, 2009

Ok, it’s not  a real Gibson, the price is so low it’s ridiculous, (mid $300′s), it has the usual bad headstock, a truss rod cover with “Les Paul Standard” printed on it, no case, a rosewood fretboard, a pickup selector switch surround with gold print (real ones have white) which overlaps the “This bourbon…” statement on the body, which is not obscured on the real ones. Also the description states;

“This a brand new guitar. The sound quality of this guitar is absolutely marvelous. I believe this instrument will please most discriminative professional player. This style professonal guitar is compelely new and nice. ”

And I didn’t edit that to sound like I was putting on my best Charlie Chan voice, that was copy n’ paste from the website, spelling mistakes n’ all. These are rare guitars, they are not available new and they are expensive.

The real Les Paul Jim Beam (above), was part of a corporate sponsorship program, a bunch of companies had some Les Paul’s done; Jim Beam, Budweiser, Indian Motorcycles amongst others. According to Gibson about 75 were made of the Jim Beam model and there are some obvious differences between the real and the fake.

The real Jim Beam Les Paul is basically a Les Paul Studio with an unbound ebony fretboard, top hat control knobs, chrome hardware, Jim Beam insignia on the headstock and a plain truss rod cover.

For sale on eBay at no reserve! I’m not sure if the seller is aware it’s a fake, though no serial number has been offered.

Ok, starting with the pot placement, not quite right, then we look at the hardware; it just seems too yellow to be the real gold plating, though that could just be the lighting. As for the fretboard, the binding should go over the frets not under them and the board itself appears to be Rosewood, it should be Ebony.

The truss rod cover has two screws in it so its a fake 2.0 as a lot of the newer fake makers have wisened to the tell tale three screw ones that made these copies easy to spot . The split diamond inlay is not right, both in it’s colour/color and it’s angle, the Gibson logo is also not at the right angle or mother of pearl. The open book headstock is not the right shape and I would hazard a guess from the picture of the back of the guitar (below) that the angle of the headstock to the neck is wrong as well.

Also please note the Gibson sticker on the pot cavity cover, I have never seen a real Gibson guitar with this sticker on it.

A worthy mention is the fake case (top), it’s not a Gibson Custom Shop issue, a real one is shown below it (above).

Thanks to Sonic Sunday of Norway for the tip off.
